Chelsea Flower Show: The Highlights
From 24-28th May, the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea were once more transformed for the annual Chelsea Flower Show, featuring beautiful plants, landscaping, and innovative new garden designs for homeowners to take inspiration from.
Here at Buckley Lawn Turf, we love taking inspiration from the latest, cutting-edge displays featured at the world’s most famous flower show, so we’ve listed some of the highlights of the show here for our customers to enjoy.
Featuring numerous floral exhibits with stunning plants from around the world, the show provided visitors with a broad range of planting inspiration for their very own gardens. Highlights included the beautiful Valeriana Officinalis, a durable and pretty flower that thrives in any soil and helps to add height to garden borders, and the Eremurus x isabellinus, also know as Foxtail lilies, with eye-catching blooms that can make a real statement in any garden.
Planting inspiration could also be taken from the stunning show gardens this year, with a theme for bright, colourful borders, tranquil water fountains or features, and subtle seating areas blended naturally into the surrounding greenery.
Visitors could also enjoy this beautiful floral arch featured at the 2016 show, designed and created to celebrate the RHS Patron, the Queen, on her 90th birthday.
This year’s remembrance poppy tribute featured 300,000 handmade, crocheted poppies laid out from the showground to the Royal Hospital, covering a total of nearly 2,000sq m. The breathtaking exhibit acts as a tribute to those who served in all wars, and received help from up to 50,000 contributors to make it a success.
Health, happiness and horticulture theme
The Chelsea flower show had a big focus on raising awareness on the positive impact gardens and gardening can have on a person’s health this year, with many displays making a healthier garden their main theme.
Features included an emphasis on the benefits of wildlife gardening; helping wildlife flourish while homeowners can enjoy watching animals enjoy their garden. Water features were also a big feature in the health and happiness theme throughout the show, adding a peaceful tranquility to a garden in which one can simply enjoy the outside elements.
Inspiration could also be taken from the ‘Get Fit Outdoors’ show garden, exploring the physical benefits can have for a person’s health. The Discovery Zone included an interactive feature which displayed how hard the muscles in your body are working when you are gardening with the aim of inspiring more people to get outside and get active.
Finalists competed for RHS Chelsea Garden Product of the Year 2016 at the show, with unique garden products such as fire pits, beautiful sculptures, and seating included. Products were also available for visitors to purchase throughout the showground, taking away limited edition pieces to adorn their own gardens.
