What is the best month to lay grass turf?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s possible to lay turf all year round, even in the autumn and winter. The main exception is during especially cold days, when the ground is frozen. In fact, there are actually many advantages to laying grass turf during the autumn and winter months, which we’ll explore in this news post below.

Advantages of laying grass turf in the winter

Many people want to make use of their outdoor spaces the most during the warmer months in the summer, by which time they’d like their grass to be thick, green and lucious. By laying turf in the winter, there’s a good 6 months for the grass seedlings to sow, establish and grow with full coverage across the lawn. Especially once spring has sprung, you’ll even need to get your lawn mower out to give the grass a trim as it’s one of the first types of plant to start growing in the season.

This also means you can spend your gardening time in the spring and summer focusing on other activities, such as planting flowers, painting the fence and setting up the BBQ. Not only that, but the fresh green blades of grass emerging from the ground will inspire you as the weather picks up. Furthermore, the grass roots will be much stronger and well established, increasing the lawn’s durability in times of increased footfall during summer parties and gatherings. Less stress and no muddy ground!

Advice for laying turf in the winter

As mentioned, it’s possible and even recommended to lay turf during the winter months. If the ground is frozen, this is realistically the only time the laying of fresh turf is prevented, with the exception of widespread flooding, but this is an occurrence that could happen at any point in the year.

Thankfully, winters in the UK these days are somewhat mild and most of the time the temperature will stay above 0°C, allowing for turf to be laid most of the winter. You may be wondering, what if the turf is laid, but then there’s a hard freeze the following week? Once the turf has been laid, you’re good to go and there’s nothing to worry about.

Colder temperatures will not damage the grass, however be aware to not damage the grass by walking over it when there is frost on the ground. Also be conscious of high winds, as these can dry out the lawn during frosty periods. If the turf does split, feel free to close the tear and the grass will grow over the divide. This is much easier when the turf is wet.

Laying turf in the autumn

If you really want your lawn to get a head start, consider laying the turf in the autumn. You’re much less likely to experience sub-zero temperatures during this time and hopefully the ground won’t be completely waterlogged from relentless storms. This also means the festive period won’t get in the way of your future lawn aspirations!

Even if you do opt for laying your turf in the winter, you can still spend the autumn months preparing your soil for optimal lawn performance. Be sure to clear away any weeds, level out the ground and break up any clumps of soil to allow for the grass roots to easily establish themselves in the soil. Also consider adding in a good garden compost or organic matter to provide nutrients for the soil.

You may want to allow the soil to settle for a few weeks before laying your turf to ensure the strongest foundations for your lawn. Giving it a good rake can help to keep things loose as well.
