FAQ's

Using turf for your lawn or garden has many benefits, such as:
  • Instant transformation: You can enjoy a beautiful and lush lawn as soon as you lay the turf rolls, without waiting for seeds to germinate and grow.
  • Quick establishment: It only takes about two to three weeks for the turf roots to grow into the soil and become ready for foot traffic.
  • Environmentally-friendly: Turf grass helps improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, cooling the environment by evaporating water, and preventing soil erosion by holding it together.
There are different types of turf available, depending on your preferences, budget, and site conditions. Some factors to consider when choosing turf are:
  • Climate: Choose a turf that is suitable for the temperature, rainfall, and sunlight levels. For example, cool-season grasses are more tolerant of frost and shade in the UK, while warm-season grasses are more drought-resistant and sun-loving.
  • Usage: Choose a turf that can withstand the amount and type of traffic you expect on your lawn. For example, some turfs are more resilient and durable for sports and play areas, while others are more ornamental and soft for relaxation and aesthetics.
  • Maintenance: Choose a turf that matches your level of commitment and resources for lawn care. For example, some turfs require more frequent mowing, watering, fertilising and weeding than others.

To calculate how much turf you need, you need to measure the area of your lawn or garden in square metres. You can do this by using a tape measure or a measuring wheel to measure the length and width of each section of your lawn, then multiplying them together. Add up the areas of all the sections to get the total area. You can also use our online turf calculator to help you with this task.

It is advisable to order about 5% more turf than you need to account for wastage, cutting, and shaping.

You can order turf from Buckley Turf online using our turf calculator, by phone, or by email. You can choose from different grades and varieties of turf, depending on your needs and budget.

You should order your turf at least two days before you plan to lay it, as fresh turf should be laid as soon as possible after delivery. The ground also needs preparing before ordering your turf, so that it can be laid immediately upon arrival.

Before laying turf, the ground needs to be prepared properly to ensure a successful establishment and a healthy lawn. Here are some steps to follow:
  • Clear the area of any weeds, stones, debris, or old grass. You can use a spade, a rake, or a hoe for this task.
  • Dig or rotovate the soil to a depth of 20-25cm (8-10in), breaking up any large clumps and removing any roots or stones. You can use a spade, a fork, or a rotavator.
  • Incorporate plenty of well-rotted organic matter, such as manure or compost, into the soil to improve its structure, drainage, and fertility.
  • Level the surface by raking it evenly and filling in any low spots or bumps.
  • Firm the soil by walking over it in different directions, then raking it lightly again. You can use your feet or a roller.
  • Water the soil thoroughly and let it settle for at least a few days before laying turf.
