Can you Lay New Turf on Top of Existing Grass?

Simply put, it is not advisable to lay turf on top of grass. Although it is possible to lay an extra layer of turf on top of your existing grass, this will cause a number of issues to develop, and result in a serious decline in overall soil condition.

Below, we have answered this common question in more detail, and explained the key reasons why we would not recommend turf laying on top of existing grass.

Why is it not recommended to lay turf on top of grass?

So, why exactly is it such a bad idea to lay turf on top of existing grass?

You may think it’s just, ‘adding more grass to the grass that’s already there’, but layering up turf can be extremely detrimental to your lawn’s overall health.

The main reasons why you shouldn’t lay turf over existing grass include:

  • The roots will struggle to establish themselves, as the existing grass will create a barrier between the new turf and the soil
  • Hampers the development of the root system overall, due to soil compaction
  • Results in a lumpy and uneven lawn, due to insufficient soil preparation
  • Existing weeds and pests have not been removed, so these will be allowed to flourish and grow through the new turf
  • Makes the new lawn look tired, as it takes on the issues of the old lawn
  • The old turf can decay underneath the new layer
  • Creates a higher risk of fungal issues
  • Results in a lawn that is less healthy overall, and at a higher risk of decomposition and deterioration

Is it possible to lay new turf on top of old grass?

It is physically possible to lay turf on top of grass. But, we would not advise doing so.

This approach is never going to achieve the best result for your lawn. Instead, it will most likely cause both your new and existing turf to decline in condition, and quickly deteriorate.

Instead, focus on either improving the condition of the existing grass, or remove the existing grass and replace it with your new turf.

To improve the condition of your current turf, you can:

  • Water your grass deeply but infrequently (watering early in the morning is recommended)
  • Choose a balanced lawn fertiliser
  • Mow your grass regularly, ensuring you’re using sharp mower blades
  • Keep your grass mowed to the recommended height
  • If you spot any bare spots, over-seed the lawn
  • Tackle any weeds, pests or diseases

Best practices for laying new turf

Or, if you decide that it would be better to replace your existing turf, then here are the recommended steps for removing and replacing grass:

  • Kill the current grass (we recommend using a non-selective herbicide, but you can also remove it manually, using a spade)
  • Remove any natural debris from the area.
  • Improve the fertility, structure and condition of the soil. You can do this by loosening the soil, and then raking in organic matter.
  • Lightly water the soil.
  • Unroll your new turf, and lay it on the area that you have prepared.
  • Gently press the turf down in place, before watering thoroughly.
  • Avoid any heavy use of your new turf until it has had a couple of weeks to settle and establish itself.

By properly preparing the ground, you ensure that the new turf has the best chance to establish strong roots and create a healthy, lush lawn.
